This project focuses on a much-needed alternative value chain adapted to material from multifunctional forestry, which managed forests to produce several products or services (Löf et al. 2016) such as timber, bioenergy and grazing (Haberl et al. 2013). Multifunctional forestry contrasts with the clearcut methods dominating Swedish forestry, which focus on wood extraction, in that that management has positive impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems (Martynova 2020; Blattert et al. 2023). With increasing focus on climate change, forests’ role as carbon sinks favors multifunctional forestry (Venäläinen et al. 2020). Consequently, national and EU goals (Levande skogar, LULUCF regulation, biodiversity strategy) recognize the management as viable. Despite benefits, adoption in Sweden remains limited; only 1-5 % of productive forest land was multifunctional as of 2022 (Skogsstyrelsen 2022; Felton et al. 2016). As such, the goal with this project is to use existing science on multifunctional forestry and data from practitioner in a potential value chain to quantify labour hours used, and money spent or earned on this practice, and hence produce the much-needed alternative value chains of multifunctional forestry products for two groups of forest owners.
